Sir John Findlay, K.C., has returned to "Wellington rroin Auckland. ■ Mr James McDonald, of Marfan, has resigned his appointment as coroner. Sir John Burns, of Burns, Philp and Co., Ltd., left "Wellington last evening for 'Sydney by the Manuka. Mr A. E. Kernot who now resides in Auckland was in "Wellington this week and left yesterday for the north. Mr W. Barton, of Featherston, who has been on a visit to America, has returned to New Zealand. Dr. T. HL. A. Valintine, Inspectortrenerot of Hospitals, has been on a visit to the I'-aranaki district. Mr P. S. Nicholls has left Christchurch on a (holiday trip to' Australia.' Sir J. D. Lynch, Mayor-of Greymouth, on a visit to the North Island, is at present in Auckland. The Hon. E. W. Alison, M.L.C., came down from Auckland to Wellington yesterday. Dr Charles E. Adams, Government Astronomer, has been appointed." Government seismologist. Mr Howard Spencer Bannister, of the'Public Trust office,-has been trans-, ferxed to the Auckland office as estates administration clerk. Mr George "William "Barlfcrop, accountant in the Government Lite Insurance Department, has been promoted to the position of secretary. Mr "Wallace Watson King, pf the Land arid Income Tax Department, has been appointed assistant income tax inspector. Mr AV. H. 'Cheeseman has received recognition as acting-Consul for Sweden at Christchurch, vice the late..Mr, Albert A. Kflye. Mr T. B. Salmon, who has occupied the position of Chief Postmaster at Oamaru, has been, appointed relieving Chief Postmaster. Sir D. Hutchins has been visiting the Auckland district to complete researches relative to the growth of New Zealand timbers, particularly totara. A further week's leave of absence from the Legislative Council was yesterday granted the Hon. E. Mitchelson. Mr William L. Gray, of St. Albans, Christchurch, has left by the Ruapehu for an extended tour of Great Britain and the Continent.- 1-. The Rev. S. 'AY. Jenkin. of AYanganui, 'has gone to Auckland in connection with the Baptist Unioni Conference, of which ho*i& president. Mr C. A. Loughnan, .of Palmerstort North, who has been on a brief business vißit to America, has returned to New Zealand. Mr R. H. Bartley, New Plymouth tramways manager and engineer, has so far recovered from his recent operation to be able to attend for a short while at his office each day. Mr Henry Josiah Hawthorn, of tho Treasury Department, has been pro; moted to the position of chief clerk, and Mr George Charles Rodda, divisional clerk, to clerk in charge. Archbishop Redwood, who has been on an extended visit to Europe, is expected to arrive back in Wellington about October 23rd by the R.M.S. Tainui. • Mr Sidney F. Hoben lias left Christchurch for the north, and will be a passenger by the Niagara. After a stay at Honolulu, he will proceed to San Francisco. I Mr M. J. Kennedy has left for Australia and Tasmania on a twomonths' holiday trip. On his return he will take over his new position with tho Wellington Gas Company. ■ The Rev. Dr «!ibb, of St. John's Church, who went to Great Britain to secure ministers and home missionaries for the Presbyterian Church in New Zealand, arrived back in Wellington yesterday. - Mr E. Short, the well-known stockbreeder, of Feilding, has returned from tho United States and Canada, whither he went on a health trip. Ha comes back quite restored by the 'change and sea voyage. Mr E. S. Wight, managing director, and Mr J. Catchpole, chairman of directors, of the Pukemiro ■ Coal Company, were in AYellington yesterday for tho purpose of attending a meeting of the Coal Mine-owners' Association to-morrow. Mr J. C. McCroa has been appointed Chief PigtnKtfiter at Napier and will probably take up his duties in about a month's time. Mr. MoCrea was formerly Postmaster at Hastings, and has more TRcently been assistant Chief Postmaster at Wellington. ' Dr. G. O Simpson, who- wos a mem ber of Captain 1 Scott's Antarctic ex Ipedition, 1910-13. bas been appointed director of tho Meteorological Office, London, in succession to Sir. Napier Shaw. Since his return from tho Ant arctic, Dr. Simpson has been Imperial Mjotcoroloeist to the Government of ; India at Simla.
It is reported that Mr AY. Robertson, of Packakariki, is lying scwoublj ill in the Trentham military hospital, Mr A. Leigh Hunt has been elccteda member ot the AVellingtoii Stoclj iiixchange. Sir John Salmond, who has been! presiding at the Supreme Court aiti tings ;in the Auckland district, re-, turned' to AYellington by the {Main; Trunk express yesterday.' The Hon. Sir AA r illiam Hall-Jones whose term of appointment to the legislative Council expired this week, has been re-appointed. He was sworn in. yesterday and resumed his scat in the council. The death of the late Mr AV. .C. Cutf was relerred to at the last meetins of the Hutt River Board. The chairman stated that the board had lost a very valuable servant, and on his motion it was decided to forward to the widow and family an expression ot sincere sympathy. The following clergymen haye oeen appointed officiating ministers under the provisions of the Marriage Act: The Revs. Robert F. Geddes, 8.A., Herbert H. Foster, M.A., and JaS* = H. Selmes, M.A., of the Church .of England; and Messrs Hani Hakaraia Tonawiri, Te Aho-o-te-rangi, Pihama and Aihe Hnirarna, of the Methodist Church. The remains of the late Mr' S. G. Ross were interred in the Karori Cemetery yesterday. Requiem Mass was said by tlie Rev.' leather Smyth, K.M., Ad-mriist-raitor, at the Sacred irlteairt Church, Hill street, in the presence of a numerous congregation, including many 1 epresentatives of the engraving'trade, in which he had occupied a" position of high esteem. The chief mourners were Messrs. AY. F.. J. R., and A. Ross (brothers), P. N. Denton, and a. J. Oakes (brothers-in-law). The pall-bearers were Messrs. W. Bock, jnr., Of. Mayer, 'Newey, and L. Cinimo. The Rev. Father Dignan, S.M., officiated at the graveside. Mr Stuart Seddon, son of the lata Mr R. J. Seddon, was a passenger by the Niagara from Vancouver. Ho, was met on his arrival by Mr T. B. X. Seddon, M.P. Mr Stuart Seddon served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces in Samoa, and after returning to the Dominion he wen; to England, where he joined the Royal A.ir Force. After gaining his wings he went to France, and served on th« Western front, including the first battle of the Somme and a long spell id Flanders. Subsequently he was sent to Italy, and served on the Piave and Assiago. Lieutenant Se4don was 6till on active service when the armistic* was signed. *
