PENNY POSTAGE
NOT IN NEAR FUTURE.
A cable message from Australia, to the effect that the Australian Government intends to reintroduce penny postage was quoted in the House yes* torday by Mr J. McCombs (Lyttelton). In view of the fact that increased postage did not necessarily mean increased revenue, ho asked, would the Prime Minister have the question of increased postal charges and their probable effect on the revenue referred to the Public Accounts Committee of the House. Mr Maesey: As a matter of fact, the Public) Aodoufnts Committee is fully occupied at present, and likely to bo so for some time to come, with other business much more urgent than the matter, important as it is, referred ta by the hon. member. I don't know whether increased postal charges mean increased postal revenue in Australia, but they certainly mean increased revenue in New Zealand.
Mr McCombs: Up to a point, possibly. . " . Mr Massey: Up to a point,, perhaps. He could not guarantee, ho added, that wo should bo able to get back to penny postage for some time to come.
