PALMERSTON NORTH
THE MOTOR-'BTJS LOAN
POLLING ON MONDAY.
(Special to the "Times.")
PALMERSTON -N., September 3. The proposed loan of £9OOO for the purchase of motor 'buses for passenger traffic comes before the Palmerston North ratepayers on Monday n«st. The pending poll is creating, as it did a few months back, a good deal of controversy between supporters of both meang of traction—'buses and trams. On the other side of the former supporters were instrumental in getting the council to eend three local gentlemen to Christchurch to report upon the municipal 'buses in that city, their investigations proved that the 'buses -were a. disappointment, xjo Mayor has further shown that the cost of running Abuses, as far as it is possible to estimate, would be £5875 and the estimated receipts therefrom £3600, leaving an annual loss of £2000; In spite of this, the supporters urge the people to buy. On the contrary, the other sado say that trams are the traction that will only .solve the problem of traffic—a problem -which every year that-passes adds to the difficulty of the solution. They emphasise the municipal masons to build for the future. They Hem thoroughly convinced that. the people ■will have permanent assets in ettrtno trams. They also, to support their contention, lay stress upon the errors of towns, the' -world over, -which have invested money in 'buses.
