During the past five years, including the period of the, war, tho Meteorological Department has,- like most other branob.es of the Government service, had to exercise the utmost care nnd economy in all parts of the Dominion, and ifc is now a matter of extreme difficulty for the Meteorological Department to cope with the.requirements for hydro-electric power, agriculture, shipping, forestry, and la*t, but not least, aviation. Consequent on the abnormal conditions that have prevailed it is essential that the branches of tho department; should he brought ■wo to date, and with this in view, the director (Mt D. O. Bates) is leaving for New Plymouth to-day. Subsequently Mr Bates will visit other parts of the- North Island and will later make a tour of inspection of the principal branches in the South Island.
One of the # most .interesting arid valuable contributions- to the paper "Ypung Citizen" just issued in Auckland, is made by Sub-Inspector "Wohlmann, who summarises _in _ plain language city by-laws prohibiting wioked, wanton, or disgraceful acts, _ particularly thoso which may be infringed owinfc to ignorance or thoughtlessness. For instance: <1) Keep to the right. (2) Do not «]»lt on the footpath. (3) Do not throw fruit skins or paper on the streets. (4) Do not loiter or obstruct traffic, and this sharp reminder is added: "Penalty up to £20." Other matters , deal with bathing, paTks, and gardens, tradinp in the streets, etc. The leading article, on "A Nation's Greatness," h written by Mr E. C Outten, B>M.
