AUCKLAND SUGAR WORKERS
BOARD OF TRADE PRESIDENT'S REQUEST REFUSED. PER PBESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, August 15. The sugar workers at Chelsea cama out on strike at midnight. A telegram was received from the president of the Board of Trade (the Hon. E. P. Lee) yesterday asking the men to hold off the strike pending a conference here on Tuesday between tho Sydney representatives of the company, the chairman of the Board of Trade, and the Conciliation Commissioner (ilr W. Newton). The union declined to agree, and at a meeting held this afternoon, it was decided to remain on strike until their demands are satisfied.
Tho union secretary, in reply to a request by Mr Lee, through Mr W. Ti. Parry, M.P., for information as to the points in dispute, telegraphed yesterday as follows:—"Union wants 44 hours and th*» company 4S. Will accept overtime at rate of time and a half for first threo l»«ura and double time after that. Holidays: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Vear's .Day, picnic day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, Anniversary Day, and the King's Birthday. AVeekly rate wanted, minimum now £3 14s, want £4 Us; ,that is, a £1 increase per man all round, and 6s retrospective payment from May." The -union membership Is 170, and the engineers and fitters are still working.
