PETONE AFFAIRS
CONSIDERED BY COUNCIL VARIOUS MATTERS DISCUSSED AT LAST NIGHT’S AIEETING. A meeting of the Pctono Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Air J. AV. AlcEwan, presiding. There were also present;—Alcssrs C. B. Broeklebank, J L. Church house, J. Kyle, AV. Hay, A Anderson, I). S. Bedingneld, G. Cook, and E. Tovey. A COMPLETE AGREEMENT.
Tho secretary of tho Wellington Engineers’, Aletal AVorkers’, and Iron and Brass Founders’ Industrial Union of Employers, wrote pointing out that a complete agreement had been arrived at between employers and employees in AVellington with reference to tlie iron industry in. tho whole of the Wellington industrial district. He pointed out that tho necessary expenses in connection with the work had been considerable, and that it had been resolved that a letter be sent to employers who are not members of tho union, apd also city and borough councils, appealing for subscriptions towards the funds ftf tho union. He hoped the appeal would receive the support of tho council. , Tho letter was “received.” NEAV HEALTH BILL.
The Alinister for Public Health advised that a new Health Bill would he introduced this session, and stated that it was desired to secure the assistance of local bodies in framing an Act which would remove most of the existing difficulties and anomalies in public health administration. He enclosed n, sketch of the proposals and asked for any comment or suggestions the council desired to make. ’ The letter was “received.” DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
The hon. secretary, Petone District High School Committee, asked that tho council consider the question of extending the present rail before the school gate in Jackson street to the boundary of tho school on either side preferably with a double rail; that the warning boards at present erected at both boundaries of the school to the corners of Beach and Queen streets respectively, be removed, as tho committee was of opinion that it would be an additional safeguard to tho children; and that the council grant the use of the Boys’ Institute section ns a playing area for tho children of the infant school—The first two matters wero referred back to. the School v-om-mitteo for consideration, coupled with a suggestion that tbev be sent on to the Education Board. In respect of the third request it was resolved to reply that tho council, did not possess the necessary authority. GENERAL. Advice was received from the Prime Alinister that tho council s suggestion with reference to increasing the pound sustenance fees had. been noted for consideration. The Alinister for Justice wrote to the effect that the council’s request that the amount paid for clerical serrices in connection with the J/iccnhing Committee ho reduced, would receive his careful consideration.
