NAURU ISLAND
QUESTION OF ADMINISTRATION. Reuter’s Telegram. LONDON, July 3. In the House of Commons, Mr, Trevelyan Thomson' asked whether the Government, as mandatory, intended to administer Nauru Island, so as to secure equal opportunities in trade and commerce with other members of the League of Nations, including tho purchase of its phosphates, in accordance with Article Twonty-two of tho League. Colonel Amery _ replied that it was intended to administer the island in accordance with the sixth paragraph of Article Twenty-two of the Covenant.
The article referred to roads;—There are territories, such as South-West Africa, and certain of tho South Pacific Islands, which, owing to the sparseness of their population or their small size, or their remoteness from tho centres of civilisation, or their geographical contiguity to tho territory of tho mandatory, and other icircurastances, can bo best administered under the laws of tho mandatory as integral portions of its territory, subject to safeguards- - . in the interests of the indigenous population.
