RESCUE OP DRIFTING STEAMER. Australian, and N-Z. Cable' Association, (Received July 5, 10 p.m.) LONDON, July 5. Captain Sverdrup reports the rescue of the Solovcl. The ice-breaker Sviatogor encountered massco of old polar ice in the Kara- Sea and steamed north-west to find new and more penetrable ice. The Sviatogor reached the Solovei by running jnto pack-ice full stcain ahead, using all 'her ten boilers. Even then she. was sometimes beaten back, but attacked the pack again and again, though at times obliged to make ten or a dozen efforts, as tb© ice was twenty feet thick in places. Finally the rescue ship brought the Solovei, with 87 persons abroad, to Archangel.
