EVENTS IN IRELAND
HOLD-UP OF TRAINLOAD OF PETROL. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, July 4. ‘The “Irish Times” describes how 30Q0 gallons of petrol intended for the military in Galway, and loaded in an ordinary goods train, was held up at Mullingar. Masked men ran the wagons into a siding, and emptied tho petrol on the ground. It asks why a valuable munition of war was sent without protection through a hostile region where guerrillas were working with remarkable audacity and infinite resource, and says that, obviously, the British Army has not yet succeeded in accommodating itself to an unprecedented and bewildering state of affairs. HOOTS FOR LORD FRENCH. LONDON, July 4. After interviewing and dining with Admiral Tapper at Queenstown, Lord French returned to go on board the destroyer Vampire. Ho was followed to tho naval pier by Targe crowds, who shouted and hooted at him. Ho was protected by an armed guard.
