N.Z. POTATOES

THE FEDERAL EAIBARGO. DR THACKER’S - BEQUEST AND REPLY. The Alayor of Christchurch (Dr Thacker) recently cabled to Sir J. Storey, Premier of New South Wales, urging him to assent in obtaining tho removal of the Federal Government’s embargo on the import of New Zealand potatoes, declaring that Christchurch much wanted coal, and, if steamers ffrom Newcastle were sent with from 3000 to 4000 tons of coal, large consignments of good potatoes could be dispatched on the ship’s return trip. Mr Storey apparently sent on the message to Air Hughes (Federal Premier), who replied that he .regretted, owing to the danger of ‘introducing “powdery scab” into Australia," and the necessity of protecting the Australian potato industry, the Government .was unable to allow the admission of New Zealand potatoes for food purposes.—(Press Association.)
