PENALTY FOR PREVENTING. PIECEWORK. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, July 5. Ms Bartholomew, S.M., gave judgment, to-day in the case in which the Inspector of Awards brought an action against the Dunedin Branch of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers claiming £IOO penalty for a breach under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act. It was alleged that defendant society during the currency of the award, took proceedings witli the intention to defeat. the provisions of the award, in that it constituted proceedings to prevent the work being done by piecework at Reid and Gray’s works. The magistrate hold the defendant union did take the proceedings with the intention of defeating clause 19 of the award, and gave judgment for the penalty. of £2O.
