PONEKE SUPERIOR
WELLINGTON SHOWS IMPROVED FORM. The senior Rugby game played at Kilbirnie on No. 2 ground on Saturday was not a very interesting contest from a spectator's point of view, but was marked throughout by clean, open play, and in view of the fact that the ground was not in the best condition, both teams played remarkably well. The Wellington team played a better game than usual, the weak link being in their combination. The Poneke team maintained superiority throughout the game, but were held at bay during the first half. J. Tilyard, the picked man for the "reps." to visit Australia, did not play, and D. Algar played a good game in bis stead. In opening the game Poneke kicked off, and shortly afterwards D. Algar scored a try for Poneke in the left corner. No further scores were secured during the first half, nor wore there iny individual displays of brilliancy, and the half-time whistle left Poneke 3 and their apponenta nil. In the second half, it was anticipated that Wellington would hold their own, but the Poneke team's combination was decidedlv superior. B. Algar, receiving an excellent pass from his brother, scored another try near tho corner flag. Francis, a Wellington forward, displayed consistent play during the game. Tho Wellington backs were not brilliant, but played a good game under the circumstances. When the Poneke backs got going they soon had the game decided, and when the whistle, went the score stood: — Poneke Wellington 0
