The "New York Times" San Francisco correspondent reports that after casting sixteen ballot* the •Democratic Convention adjourned for. several hours. The sixteenth ballot result© 1: McAdoo 337, Palmer 164*, Cox 454*. It is understood that Governor Cox's ascendancy is due to the alignment of the supporters of Palmer and Cox in New \ork, Indiana, and New Jersey, against McAdoo, and they decided to concentrate their support to Cox. It is expected that if Cox is unable to secure a two-thirds majority the same forces will concentrate upon a "compromise" candidate, but not McAdoo. . 'There is rumour that President Wilson may urge support for McAdoo, who is "hie son-in-law. THE DEMOCRATIC PLATFORM. SILENT ON T.iE~LIQUOR QUESTION. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. Three representatives of Irish soci. eties, who desire the inclusion of a plank in the Democratic platform in favour of the recognition of.;Hhe Irish republic, held a.' stormy 'meeting', at which it was decided that a committee of two should visit each Presidential aspirant, and determine whether he favours the inclusion of such a plank. It was further advocated that tho fight for the recognition of Ireland should be taken on to the floor of the convention if necessary. It is understood that the platform committee has adopted - a plank by which tho Democratic party will ■_express its sympathy with the aspirations of Ireland for self-government, and will pledge itself to such action in the master as would be consistent with international comity and usage. Senator Simmons, of North Carolina, Mr Harris, Governor-General of the Philippines, and Mr Carter Glass wore placed in the nomination list.
