STREET FATALITY
WOMAN KILLED BY MOTOR-CAS. WHILE CROSSING LAMBTON QUAY. A middle-aged single woman named Blanche Saunders met with a tra.gio death late on Saturday night through being accidentally knocked down on Lambton quay by a motor-car driven by Thomas Charles Atkinson Hislop, a junior member of the legal firm, Brandon, Hislop, and Brandon, 135 Featheraton street. It appears that at 10.30 p.m., Miss Saunders went to cross Lambton quay towards Kelburn avenue from Grey street, and when three-quarters of the distance across she found herself in front of Mr Hislop's motor-car, which was proceeding northward. The deceased ' hesitated, went onward, hesitated again, and stepping backward as struck by the front part of the motor-car. "The driver had swerved first to the left and then to the right. but was not able to avoid running down Miss Saunders. The car went partly over her, and when she was picked up blood as flowing from a wound on her face, her forehead also being cut about. She was breathing, but unconscious. Mr Hislop took her hurriedly in his car to the Bowen street private hospital, where Dr Herbert attended her within ten minutes of the accident, but he found life extinct.
The deceased was employed as a housemaid by Mr W. D. Hunt, 29, Ngaio road, Kelburn. A sister of Mass Saunders,. Mrs Knox, resides at 121, Hataitai road, Hataitai. Mr Hislop, who waa in charge of the motor-car, is tho son of tho Hon. Mr T. W. Hislop, formerly Minister of tho Crown ;and Mayor of Wellington. Mr Hislop was severoly wounded while en active service. An inquest is .to he held.
