BEFORE THE MAGISTRATE VARIOUS OFFENDERS BEFORE TILE COURT YESTERDAY. A man named Jeremiah Brosnahan was, at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, sentenced to throe months’ imprisonment for stealing an overcoat from Hope Bros.’ shop in Cuba street. “FORGOT TO RETURN THEM." William K. Ilopkinson and Florence Hopkinson, a young Maori rouple, were charged before Mr E. Pago, S.M.. with the theft of an aluminium comb and a woollen muffler, the property of Thomas Whatnough, Accused stated that, having rented a room at a boardinghouse, and finding there was no comb on the dressing table, the female accused borrowed the articles mentioned from tho room opposite and forgot to return them. Tho female accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within a period of two years, and tho male defendant was ordered to pay £4 and expenses 16s, in default twenty-one days’ imprisonment. Mr Treadwell and Mr J. F. B. Stevenson appeared for the defendants. ALLEGED VALUELESS CHEQUE. William Frederick McMurray appeared on a charge of attempting to obtain money by means of a valueless cheque. It was contended for accused that exceptional hardship and destitution led to the offence, and being presso l for mdney ho was tempted to fill in a blank cheque for £2. Accused Was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon over a period of two years. Mr Treadwell appeared for defendant. OTHER CASES. Thomas Ash, charged with being tho owner’of a dog that attacked a man in a public place, was ordered to pay costs of court. 9s 6d, and damages 2s 6d. A man named William Dighton sought to get Adolph Perham bound over to keep the peace on the grounds that he had used threatening and insulting language to plaintiff in Tory street. Accused was convicted and ordered to enter into a personal bond of £25 and to pay costs.
