The State Treasurer, explaining the heavy deficit (£1,804,COO), in spite of tho record revenue, said it was duo to the increase of unforseen expenditure. He instanced tho establishment of the basic wage, which cost tho country £1,758,000, compensation on account of the influenza epidemic victims £385,000, additional police pay £lB.000, and fodder for starving stock £131,000. In view of the deficit further taxation is anticipated.
