The death of Mr John Leslie, of Nelson, at the age of SO years, is recorded. The deceased, who was a well-known resident of the Nelson district, was formerly a member of the staff of the_ Bank or New Zealand, and when he retired from the service of the-bank was manager of the Pictou branch. -

Mr Caleb Selfe,,,who,.died at-Burwood, Christchurch, was, the oldest resident ot the’district, having arrived at Lyttelton by the ship Roman" Bmperor in 1860. Later he was a. member of a party who took part in tho gold rush at Gabriel's Gully. . The deceased was instrumental in founding the Burwood Church and school.

Cooper (chairman) and Councillor Howell were appointed yesterday as delegates from the Hutt County Couu cil to attend a conference, convened by the Horowhenua County Council for the purpose of forming an electric power district for tho purpose of atstnnunng the power from the Mangahao scheme.

■ The late Mr Esau Gibbard, who died at Nelson, was a veteran of the. South African war. His youth and early manhood were spent on the West Coast. He then went to South Africa, and on war breaking out joined the Durban Light Infantry, fighting . throughout the campaign. On returning to A"ew Zealand, he took up farming in the Nelson dis. trict. _

Mr H. Sibun, one of Petone’s principal i-eta il merchants, died yesterday enorttitig-at his‘ residence in Manchester street. Mr Sibun was -born 58 yearn ago at New Brompton, Kent, England, and served his apprenticeship to the grocer} ’ trade in London, where he afterward! went into business on his own account. Fifteen years ago he arrived in New Zealand, and shortly afterwards went into business in Petone, w-here he had beer ever since.

One of Canterbury’s early practitioners, in the person of Dr- C Nedwill, has died. at Christchurch. The 'deceased gentleman, who was S 3 years of age, commenced his professional career as an army surgeon. He arrived in the Dominion in 1863 as surgeon on the ship Chariot of Fame, and commenced practice in. New Zealand at Rangiora. Tho deceased took a keen interest in sport, "was fond of shooting, cricket and tennis, and vais at one time president of several sports bodies in Christchurch.

Tho Wellngton Presbytery last evening passed the following resolution ; —“li accepting the resignation of the Rev. Hugh Beggs tl;e Presbytery place on record its appreciation of the faithfulnesi with which he has. discharged his dutiei as a minister of the Evans Bay charge and on the ability and earnestness which have marked his pulpit work. . . Tin Presbytery regrets that the state of Ml Beggs health is such as to make a period of rest and retirement necessary.”

Hendry (president) referred with deep regret to the death of the late Mr George Allport, the rconlly retired secretary to tho Marine Department. Corinthie. after a long period .of wax service in the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean ohd elsewhere. He was a captain-surgeon, on the hospital ship Dougola, which at first was running between Gallipoli and Malta, then engaged in the Mesopotamian campaign, and she carried sick and wounded in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean run, between Basra and Bombay. Just before the Armistice was signed. Dr. Muir” joined the South African medical force, and 'worked "in it. for twelve months, till he was demobilised last November. Ha was on the Berwick Castle when she was burned at sea off the. East African.coast; all the passengers, officers, and crew were safely landed at Mombasa,
