THE AFGHAN SITUATION
CONFERENCE WITH BRITISH AUTHORITIES. "AMEER MUST~SHOW GOOD FAITH." • Australian and N.Z.. Cable /Association. •-•- DELHI;- April 10 ; Representatives of. the Afghan Go, vernmen* are on their way to India, with the object of discussing questions with the British authorities. At tho Rawalpindi Conference it was made perfectly clear that tho Ameer must show good faith hy actions, before tho old friendly relations could be, resumed. ' The situation. in Afghanistan is obscure. At tho samo time it is unquestionable that Afghan _ intrigues played an important part in the re. cent frontier fighting. Tho Bolshevik mission is still being entertained at Kabul. It is difficult to see how any permanent arrangement can bo entered into with tho representatives .of Afghanistan. From a military point of view little is to he feared from the Bolshevik thrcaite against India. Afghanistan, however, has, an extremely vulnerable frontier, and could not muster sufficient forces, to oppose a Bolshevik advance. Britain's undertaking 'io protect Afghanistan against foreign aggression has lapsed, hut India could hardly view «VBolshevik success with equanimity.
