ANTHRAX IN SHAVING GEAR
JAPANESE BRUSHES DANGEROUS. Tho question of the danger of contracting anthrax from Japanese, shaving brushes was mentioned at yesteiday's meeting of the AVellington Central Chamber of Commerce. It was mentioned that the Chiei Health Officer, Dr A r alintine, had written to the effect that the Customs Department had been informed that no method of disinfection ,could be considered satisfactory. In some instances where the articles were accompanied by a certificate from an officer of tho Health Department of the country of origin, satisfactorily identifying them and stating that the hair from which they were made was effectively cleaned, they might be all&wed in without further action. So far as the New Zealand Health Department was concerned, the only cases of anthrax reported from both England and America originating in Japanese brusbware had been duo to tho use of shaving brushes. Furthermore, extensive bacteriological tests of samples of hair-brushes of Japancso origin had been carried out by the department on several occasions without detection of anthrax baccilli.
