AMOKURA MEDALS

PRESENTED BY..SIr!Hv. 11. .HERRIE3. PRAISE FOR. THE BOYS. The New Zealand training ship AmoIcura was'cu feto yesterday on the occasion of the the Han, Sir W .H. Herries. (Minister for Marine), of the gold and silver medals to the boys who had secured tho highest marks during tho past year. Tho medal-winners wore:—H. M. -Hughes, of Matamau, Ha.wke's Bay, gold medal ; mid G. S. Hamlin, of Christchureh. 6ilver medal. The Minister also presented the silver medal for -1918 to tho winner, 11. J. Mackenzie, who had been away at «sa ever-einee- ho won it. and therefore unable Ho re coive the medal.

The Minister, who was accompanied by his secretary Mr Johnson, and by Mr B. \V. Millier, acting-Secretary for Marino, complimented tho boy* on the good work they, , had done, and congratulated the staff, .on .the good Jesuits their training had produced, and upon tho general appearance—-smart and seamanlike—of the Jads and tho ship. Ho referred to , the fact *h»tt the now training ship would ho coming out soon to replace tho Amokura. She was, he said, a much larger and mora commodious bout. bJi« would bo able to tako many more boys than tho old training ship, had served them so long'. _ In fact" she would be able to take practically all that were offering. The Minister granted the boys a half-holiday in honour ot the occasion, and tlioy manned the rigging and gave him three hearty cheers' :is lie left for the shore.
