BOYS IN CAMP
THE WOMAN'S INFLUENCE. : ''Women can see to it thaitr the moral.aspect of camp-life is attended to,'' says Major-General Russell in advocating the policy of the National .Defence Lieague. "They, only, 'can Tiring up boys who will withstand' temptation. The churches- must help and ; the fathers do their share; but, it. is-the women of New Zealand who have the main part in. the character-moulding; of the future manhood of.„ New- Zealand. It l is easy to understand that any mother, who heard the stories, some of which, no doubt, were t-rue,,. of the foul, used- in the. camps, would look with diffidence, dislike, aifd : distrust on the idea of her son mixed up in it. Wo could not expect such : a mother - to,, support Khe. league unless the league se,*'. to it that that kind of thing is put an end to, and its place taken by the influence of educatiqa that will lead to moral elevation as well as physical improvement. As tha best guarantee that this will be done the league urges the employment Of specially-selected' women in our trainings camps, . : , "At the same time it is essential that the public should recognise the. truth in this matter.. The real fact was that the language was taken into the camps; the camps were ho* responsible" for it, but the lack of training; the lads received before they went there. I believe that is the truth. The National Defence League will make, its- ideal that, every mother,, when her son conies. back from camp, should sa.y, 'When is> the , next one going to be hold?" because she was so ('pleased with thfe results."
