A STOLEN RING

ACCUSED'S STOK'Y: COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE.

Tho circumstances placed before the presiding justices—Captain W. H. Hcnnah and Mr M. C. O'Connell—at the Police Court yesterday in connection with a charge of theft were somewhat peculiar, and for more than one reason. It appeared that, on or about January Ist, 1917, at Wellington, a married woman. Mary Sybella Webster (Mr P. W. Jackson) stole a lady's gold ring, sot with rubies and diamonds nnd valued at £l4, from Janet Flynn. She was taxed with the crime, but denied guilt, and the matter was then placed in tho hand-* of the police, hut without result. No trace of the missing article was discovered until January of the piesent year. when tho complainant's husband, who had always kept a sharp lookout for tho ring, noticed it displayed in the window of the shop of Maurice Brickman, licensed secondhand dealer, of Courtcnay place. Ho entered the shop as a prospective purchaser of the trinket, and as a result of an examination was convinced that it was his wife's property. The police were once more communicated with, the jewel recovered, and Mrs Webster again taxed with' tho offence. Tho latter then made a written confession in which she alleged that she sold tht. ring to a man in charge at Brickman's shop for tho sum of 10s. She was not asked for, nor did she give n n n me. .Mrs Rrirkmnil. on oat!i, that she knew the accused. Tin-.
