SWIMMING CARNIVAL
AT IE ARO BATHS MISS V. WALROND, AUCKLAND. BREAKS RECORDS. Tbo swimming carnival held at the Te Aro Baths on Saturday, under the auspices of 'the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, the Royal Life Saving Society, and the Wellington Surf Association, proved a great success. The weather conditions were favourable, though in the latter part of the afternoon the wind was perhaps a trifle cold, and slight showers of rain fell. The entries were good and tho various events wore contested with great spirit and fine sportsmanship, a number of the . finishes being very close. There was a large attendance of the general public, all the available accommodation being fully occupied, and the sports were followed throughout with the greatest interest. Among 'the ladies who took part in the swimming contests .were Miss ,V. Walrond (Auckland) and Miss Q. Sbnnd (Canterbury), both of whom have been nominated, along with Mr S. Atkinson (New Zealand champion breast-stroke swimmer, Christchurch) for the next Olympic Games. In the Ladies’ Invitation Race (100yds), Miss V. Walrond did the distance in the splendid time of "Isec, beating her own Auckland time of 71 2-ssec, and also the New South Wales record of 71 4-ssco. DUTHIE CUP. Tho Duthio Cup was won by the Mount Cook School \dn 2mrn 49sec; Terrace School, 2; Clyde qua- School, 3. SWIMMERS’ MEMORIAL CUP. In the life-saving race, a good contest resulted in the Island Bay Surf Club winning in 2min 40 l-s»ec-. Ladies’ Royal Life Saving Society, 2 (2min 47 2-sseo); Byall Bay Surf Club, 3 (2min 49 2-sseo). The Flying Squadron Race—a 500yds relay event by teams of five, was won by the Lyall Bay Surf Club in smin 45sec; tho Wellington A.S.C. being a close second: and the Thorndon Swimming Club third. The Ladies' Royal Life Saving Societv swam very piuclcily but were quite outclassed. 100yds BREASTSTROKE. First Heat—Ferguson (12sec start), 1; D. Lomas (12see), 2; Allan (lOseo), 3. Imin 30 1■ 5” 00, - Final—Fergnson, 1: Lomas, 2; Claridgo. 3. ~ Time, Imin 25 3-ssec. LADIES’ INVITATION RACE. Miss V. Walrond, Auckland, 1; Miss G. Shand (Canterbury), 2; Miss K. Bristod (Canterbury), 3. Time, 71seo. Miss Walrond swam with a very neat, graceful, yet powerful stroke throughout, her style being easily the best exhibited at tho carnival. Miss Shand, the runnerup, put un a very good race; and Miss Bristed, 3rd, was not very far behjnd. 100YDS PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP. This event provided a very good contest. Patterson (Wellington, New Zealand champion) won in 60 1-ssec. D. Murrell (also of Wellington) being a good second. ■ MEN’S DIVING. Dighton, 1; W. Hicks, 2; F. Ferguson. 3 Very neat work was done by ail three; but Digbton, on tho whole, was boat, 50YDS MEN’S OPEN HANDICAP.
