General entries for the Canterbury autumn meeting close to-day. Accept, ances for the Great Easter Handicap and Great Autumn Handicap close at the same time. Southland acceptances are due to-day. Nominations for all events at the Mauawatn autumn meeting will close to-day, at 9 p.in., also forfeit of 1 sov for the Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes (twelfth) and the Manawatu Stakes (sixteenth). The crack galloper Arrowsmith hag E one into 3T- ChristmaaNs stable at xv-ic-carton. Christmas took him south on Wednesday night. A good gallop was registered at Riecarton this week when Macduff and Onslaught covered five furlongs in under 62sec. Visitors who were present at the recent Marlborough meeting are of the Opinion that the new track as a particularly good one, and that ljy. nest meeting it will be in great condition. In the South Amythas is favourite for the Great Easter. When Cruciform. won the Great Easter it® 1902 she carried 9.9 and ran the seven furlongs in Imin 28 3-ssec. So groat a certainty was the race reckoned, for her that in a field of ten she paid a long way inside evens. In tms, ner tbrce-vear-old soason, the brilliant chestnut won nine races in fourteen starts. It looks as if a turn at hurdling has enabled Movement to stay on better than she did n year or so ago but although she ran second in the Opunake Cup on Wednesdav, the time was slow and the field weak. On this courso twelve months ago she made her debut over fences, and won. Later in the day she was brought out in the °Pf° sprint and was very unlucky to be beaten narrowly by Madam Riston when paying a big price. Fiery Cross galloped five furlongs ln Unin 2sec at Ricearton the other morn, ing, and pulled up well. The crack two-year-old Moorfowl looks very well, and will be in great condition for the autumn fixtures. F. I). Jones has recently added to his team a two-year-old filly cloeoly related, to Bstland and Finmark. , ' Chaoronia, who was sold from J. Lowe’s Trentham stable recently, is work- ! ing nicely at Ricearton. I Sasanof’s weight in the Great Autumn Handicap, 9.13, is a burden which no horse has yet carried to victory in the race. Five years ago Warstep won with 0.11. The speedy Brackenfiold, which was sold recently by the Blenheim sportsman, for whom he won several races, is working well on the tracks at Riccarton, and is credited with, some attractive gallops. St. Winnow, which was entered for the Great Autumn and tbe Great Easter Handicaps, has gone wrong, and will be on the retired list for some time. Some idea of the growth of racing may be gathered from illustrations provided by the totalisator figures. Opunake is a'place of about 500 inhabitants; yet its club put through just on .£30,000 on Wednesday. Ten years ago that club could only boast of a totalisator turnover of £1212, and in the same year the amount handled at Ellerslie* on Auckland Cup day was only £25,611. Who would have predicted then that in "ten years this small club would put through on its one day more than Auckland was then putting through on its biggest day?

An unrecorded • incident of Newmarket Day at Flemington (Victoria) is told by a Sydney bookmaker. Late in the afternoon, when the bag was pretty full, one of the clerks sniffed and asked what was on fire. The bookmaker and his clerks felt their pockets, but could find nothing. . Suddenly smoke was seen coming from tho bag. The notes were on fire. Needless to say. there was more haste crowded into the next few seconds than for the rest of the afternoon combined. All that was lost were a couple of 10s notes. A few others were scorched.

.1. McCombs's stable won a Rood double at Waimate yesterday when Bon Spec scored in the Cup and Pyjama in the President’s Handicap. The time telegraphed for the Cup (Imin 27sec) is particularly smart. Mr E. W. Ellis, chairman of the Victoria Pacing Club’s stipendiary stewards. has resigned as from March 31st. Mr J.
