THE BRITISH CROWN
NEW ZEALAND "THE; BRIGHTEST gem." Z'Z “We are still continuing to enjoy a large measure of prosperity, due to our splendid credit and .the prevailing high prices," said the Hem. Arthur Myers at the Commercial,™ Travellers Club- yesterday. “But," ho added. “I .would just like to suggest a note of warning, that these high prices are not, possibly, likely to continue for a number ot years, and that, we all seem inclined to bo extravagant. . . We must not lose sight of .the fact that opr production is no commensurate with the, obligations we have entered into as > the result of tho war, and you as commercial men should do all in your power to improve the idea to reduce that inclination to extravagance. If you do so —I speak with some authority -as-having had control of tho finances of this country for some time —then in this glorious I do not fear tho-future. “The brightest gem in the British Crown, I believe it has a great future tefore it. I believe the time will come when we will become a self-contained Empire. I see that at Home a Commission is sitting endeavouring to _ restrict investment within the Empire: and that is one-of-the-best-things that can possibly occur. Immigrat'on also will probably bo confined to the Empire; and if these things_ are done, we shall see our Empire, whiob has always stood for freedom and justice, stronger than ever." (Applause.)
