On charges of drunkenness, five first-offenders were dealt with .by Mr E. Page, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday.
The Ulimaroa, ‘with passengers, eargo and Australian mails, left Sydney at 1 p.m. yesterday for Wellington where sho is duo on Monday morning.
During the hearing of the Carpenters’ dispute in the Arbitration Court at Dunedin, it was stated that 45 carpenters had gone north within a short space of time because of tho higher remuneration offering there.
One judgment summons case was dealt with by Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court, yesterday, Cecil Cavendish James being ordered to pay to Linda James the sum of £25 8s .by instalments of Ji2 per month.
Colonel J. J, Esson (aoting-Secre-tary to the Treasury) acknowledges in last night’s “Gazette” tho receipt ot the sum of £5, forwarded to the Railway Department by a person unknown, as oonsdence-money to the New Zealand Government; and a further i-S similarly forwarded to the Prisons Department.
Some of those closely connected with the 'business of_ procuring houses say that the position is becoming more baffling than ever. One gives an instance in which a five-roomed house recently changed hands for £IBOO. This was regarded by the agent who effected the sale as a tremendous price, but to bis surprise tho owner quickly re-sold the house for £2IOO.
His Honour Mr Justice Stringer asked a question without receiving an. answer in the Arbitration Court at Dunedin. It was said that iu 1916 twelve tons of iron was produced by four men nt a cost of £3, In 1920 the same quantity was produced by five men at a cost of £4 16s 9d. In connection, with the fatal accident at th© Dominion mine, Wakaniarinn, to a man named Leonard Humphries on D©comber 14th last, th© certificate of the mine manager (Mr James Carroll) has been suspended’ for three months. At the Warden’s Court held on February 23rd before Mr P. L. Bollings, S.M., and two assessors, it •was found that tho rise in which the accident occurred had not been properly timbered as required by the Mining Act, that ladders wore not provided in the rise, and that these breaches ot the Act had not been recorded in the mines rauo”*' -ho
Regulations for deer-shooting in the Auckland, South Canterbury and Duller districts were gazetted yesterday.
Licenses for the use of stills have been granted by tho Minister for Customs (Sir IV. 11. Homes) to Mr Frederick James Porter, Auckland,, and to the New Zealand Soap and Candle Co., Ltd., Kaiwarra.
On tiro motion of Mr Cox, the late president of the Melrose Ratepayers’ Association, the association decided at its annual meeting held last night, to endorse tho action of the Town Planning Association in protesting to the continuous filching of the town belt.
One tenement case was dealt with by Mr R Page, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court, yesterday, William Corcoran being ordered to give up possession of a dwelling to Agnes Mary Mottrain by April Ist. -Ho was also ordered to pay £1 4s costs.

MeOallum, M.P., amid applause and laughter, at the Commercial Travellers’ Association's farewell gathering yesterday. ‘'Not that. I have much property,” ho added whimsically.
It was decided at the annual meeting of tho Melrose Ratepayers’ and Electors’ Association last night to form a Cottage Garden and Beautifying Association. A special committee, consisting of Mesdaraes F. fi. Tonks, and J. Brooker, and Messrs IV. D. Aitken, Dobson, and A. IV. Lister was set up, with power to add.
