OBSERVATIONS ABROAD

OUR MILK SYSTEM "UP-TO-DATE" SAYS COUNCILLOR NORWOOD. An interesting letter dealing with the handling of milk supplies in America has been received bv the Acting-Mayor (Mr George Frost) from Councillor C. 13. Norwood, of the Wellington City Councial. Writing from New York, Councillor Norwood says:— .... , "Since I arrived in this country on December 29th at San Francisco, I have spent the greater part of my time travelling, and I have visited most of the important American cities. On this side all public undertakings are enormous compared with our own little country, •but in many respects I have felt proud at the general up-to-dateness of our own little city of Wellington. "WELLINGTON ACTED WISELY." "I havs had the opportunity, though a hurried one, of paying attention to tho milk question on this side, and in nearly every important town thoro arc difficulties somewhat similar to those experienced in Wellington, and it is a problem that is exercising tho minds of tho authorities in each of tho important centres. I turnod up at my hotel this morning at 4 o'clock, having spent the night with one of the chiefs of the Health Department of New York. They have been most kind in their endeavours to afford me all possible information, and during last night I was able> to inspect the conditions under which the milk was brought into the city, and from the information I have gained during my various conversations, t am forced more than ever to tjio conclusion that Wellington acted wisely, and it now only remains for the council to bring its milk scheme to tho state of the highest possible efficiency. • INTERESTING COMPARISONS.

"A very complete inquiry has just been concluded, and the civic authorities are to applr to the American Government for legislation giving power to improve tho conditions. They are Keenly interested in trettinsr as mnch information as possible concerning our own scheme. Tho milk question is regarded by the Health Department os the most serious factor in the increased cost of living. Its price has more than doubled, i.n tho last two and a-half years. Tho cost of living problem in Now Zealand is nothing comnnmd with this country, nnd the experience hero makes one foel that tho people of New Zealand 6hould be very happy indeed."
