RIFLE SHOOTING

SHIELD MATCHES WELLINGTON RIFLE CLUB'S COMPETITION. Tho annual teams matches for the Wellington City and Suburban Riflf Club’s challenge shields (junior and senior) were fired at Trentbam on Saturday afternoon. Although the weathe; conditions wore good for most forms o. outdoor recreation they were not si good from a. shooting point of view On Saturday about 70 riflemen tool, part in tho matches and of these onh ten scored 90 points or more out of i. possible XOo. Four teams, one from each of the Wellington city and suburban clubs, competed for the senior shield. Following upon the recent success of the Pctone team at Grey town and uponthi good aggregate performances ol individual members at the . recent Dominion meeting, it war confidently expected that the Petone club would give a good account of itself. This fact was demonstrated early in Saturday’s match when the Petoiie team established a lead of 6 points from the Suburbs club at the 300 yards range. Tho Old Navals team were then lying third and Karori last. The latter presented the best score sheets in the early part of tho 500 yards shoot, but Potone’s ten men wen more consistent and compiled a range score of just under 31 points per man. At this distance the Old Navals’ team displaced the Suburbs team from second position. On reaching the 600 yards mound'Petone had a lead of 19 points from the Old Navals, who were one point ahead of Suburbs. The latter were unfortunate in having to complete the match with only nine men, but as subsequent events showed . they could not . have overtaken Petone’s total score. The Old Navals’ team did not hold its position at 600 yards, thereby ■ enabling the Karori team to run into second place. The final figures showed a win for Petono by 20 points, exactly 2 points per man.

A special feature of the match was a “possible” at 600 yards registered by Rifleman Franklyn, of the Old Navals’ Club. The highest score over all ranges was registered by Rifleman „ Warburton, of Petono. _ At the conclusion of the match Pres. Fellingham, acting-chairman . of the. Wellington Riflh Clubs’ Union, complimented the Petone Club on its welldeserved win, a.nd paid a graceful tribute to the excellent standard of shooting which the Petone club had always maintained. Mr Fellingham also conveyed thanks of the competing teams to Mr H. Hawthorne, who as honorary range officer had once again carried out his work efficiently. He also thanked Messrs W. Cowan and J. McDonald, whose experienced knowledge had been of great assistance in the trench. ... The following are the detailed scores of tho teams; — SENIOR SHIELD MATCH. .
