NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “Carbine.")

Kumara nominations close to-mor-row.

To-morrow acceptances close for tho Rangitikoi meeting. Hori, winner of tho Maiden Plate at Dannevirke on Saturday, is trained by E. George at New Plymouth. He is described as being by Elysian or Coronet. The Feilding Cup. which is to he run on Easter Monday, is worth £750 to the winner. Air E. W. Alison, junr., was a buyer at the recent Victorian yearling sales, securing a gelding by Land of Song from Makarim, and a filly by Land of Song from Smoky, tho latter a. fullsistor to Cape Sky, one of the winners at the V.B-.C. autumn meeting. Tho youngsters will he brought from Australia by the first available boar. One more attempt is being made to get the speedy Wrestler fit to race. It is a. great pity the son of Antagonist is so-unsound, for he has a lot of pace. The Liverpool Grand * National Steeplechase, the great cross-coun-try race of England, is to bo decided on March 26th. The race is run over a course of about four miles and a half. Last year’s steeplechase was witnessed by many New Zealanders in khaki, and several who are entitled to express an opinion voted the winner, Poethlyn, the greatest ’chaser they had ever seen. The well-known South Australian sportsman, Dt Bennett, sent three yearlings into the nng at the recent Victorian sales, all from New Zealandbred mares. The prices realised were: —B cby Oyklbn—Erey Oge, by Soult, W. Jacobson, 373g5; ch o by Cyklon— Cyrenaica, by Cyrenian, G. Buckley, 190 gs; ch o by Cyklon,—Clochette, by Seaton Delaval, H. Chisholm (Sydney), 52ogs. .T. B. Pearson, who owns a mixed, team, of gallopers and trotters, amongst the latter being Sungod and Star Queen, had quite a field day at Akaroa. winning three races in succession. Ho won his first race with Henrietta. Her owner had a modest tenner on when she won. His second win was in tho Akaroa Cup, when a recent purchase in Warlike, by .Martian—Labour Day, won in great stylo. This geldinj was purchased from Air T. H. Lowry for 250 sovs, and has proved a rare bargain, winning four races. His third was with Clean Sweep, a gelding by Advance, which paid a double-figure dividend when he ran second to Some Kid at tho C.J.Cmidsummer meeting at Riccarton last month. If asked to name at which meeting the richest handicap on record in England was decided, racing men of the present generation, would not give the correct answer, says the “Winning Post.” They would be astonished to Jearn that it was at Leicester, where, in 1801, tho Royal Handicap was worth £6083, -less deductions for second and third. Tho lato Mr Hamar Bass (father of Sir William) won with Rusticus, who scored again tho next year, when the prize was reduced by a thousand pounds. Tho following year tho race was abolished.
