Tho Mayo rof a 'town in Ontario a few years back was honoured by a visit from the Canadian Premier in his capacity of Minister of Trade and Commerce. Ho curiously enough signalised tho occasion by naming twins, with which his wife had just presented him, _ ‘"Trade" and “Commerce” respectively. Writing of his experiences of old university days in- tho "Otago Daily Times,'' Mr W. Goodlot, who' was chemistry laboratory assistant for seventeen years from 1877, gives some reminiscences which show what a hard time the woman student had even in Now Zealand in. pioneering days, ilesays: “Thai Arat lady who intended to join the. Medical School as a student was Miss Tracey, now the wife of Mi- Drummond, chief reporter of the “Dyttelton -Times.” She did not get any encouragement from Dr. Scott at tho time, and did not have anyone to hack her up. Miss Tracey attended tho chemistry classes and other classes, but was very much disappointed at not entering the Medical School. Miss Tracey, I can remember, was a good student with Professor Black. Miss Siedcberg, who joined tho Medical School later, was tho first lady to take tho mudical course, and I must say she deserved great credit for the way she stuck to her work in tho dissecting room. Sho had a very unpleasant time'among the male students. They did not want ladydoctors. I am speaking as one who knows all about it, and the lady students have to thank Miss Siedeberg for her pluck in making .way for them. Miss Cruickshank joined Mias Siedeberg later on, and things went on much better. 1 had to have hot water and chloride of lime ready every day, -by Professor Black's orders, for Miss Siedeberg to wash her hands and face. Tho young men would throw the flesh at her every chance they got." On a snail’s tongue, which resembles along narrow .ribbon, as many as 20,000 teeth are sometimes distributed.
