BRIDGE OVER HUTT RIVER

COUNCIL PROMISES SUPPORT. A deputation of Stokes's Valley ancl Haywarda residents, headed iby Dr P. Knight, waited on tho Hutt County Council in order to obtain advice as to the building of a bridge over the Hutt River opposite the Haywards railway stafcion. Dr "Knight said that there was a great need for a bridge connecting Pahautanui with / the main TVaJrarapa road. The residents and settlers in tho surrounding districts, Dr Knight said, would be prepared to be specially rated for the bridge which, if erected, would ba a matter of importance ana benefit to both 'Wellington and the suburbs. Mr J. Pearco was of the opinion that the sito on which it was proposed to build the bridge at Haywards was the connecting link with the West Coast, and should have been built ten years ago. The Ep-uni riding should be the principal riding in charge of affairs. Pahautanui should bo given the impetus to further .open the district, and bo a convenience to those who "wished to 'travel. .The council assured tho deputation of generous support, if a subsidy could be obtained from the Government by tho committee of residents.
