SWIMMING

CLUB RACES AT ISLAND BAY. . The first of a series of club races was held by the Island Bay Surf and Life-saving Club on the Island Bay beach on Saturday afternoon. The club has three cups and one shield for competition amongst its ' members—the Laurenson Cup for lady swimmers, tho Coy Cup for men members, tho Brabin Cup for the man who proves himself most efficient in the art of life-saving, and the Odlin Shield to be won by a life-saving team. The cups will bo allotted to those gaining the highest aggregate of points in the several events hold each Saturday afternoon. Ideal weather and a shore wind enabled the officials of the club last Saturday afternoon to get the races off With dispatch, and io the satisfaction of the large gathering of the public on tho beach. The events resulted:—■

100yds on Back, Arms Folded.—E. Maddox 1, C. Maddon 2. Points to count for Brabin Cup. 50yds Handicap.—G. Spriggins 1, D. O'Keefo 2, B. Anderson 3. Points alloted for Coy Cup. 50yds Ladies' Handicap.—'Miss L. Skinner I, Miss L. Chipper 2. Doints count for Laurenson Cup. A race was also held for children; which resulted: L. Claridge 1, A. Gibbon 2, W. Hinds 3. Two of tho cluib's members, N. Francis and L. Allen, have boon selected to go to Auckland, where tho New Zealand Swimming Championships are to bo hold about the middle of the month, to compete for the Nelson Shield.
