Replying to Lord Haldane's opinion that the Liberal party is passing and its future lies with Labour, Mr H. H. Asquith is reported to have replied:—"What nonsense! The Liberal party was never so vigorous since the war ended." Lady Bonham-Carter continues to be one of her father's best assets. She told a -women's meeting that without Liberalism they would be between the "Coalition devil" and the "Labour 3eep-sea.' J OUTLOOK IN EUROPE. NOT A CLEAN PEACES SAYS MR ASQUITH. (Received February 10, 1.30 a.m.) LONDOIN, February 7. Mr Asquith, at Paisley, said that the international situation was dark and alarming. The new frontiers in Central and Eastern must necessarily be purely provisional. If new States were set up the tariff barriers would be a steady menace to future peace. All agreed that Germany should pay the largest sum possible as war damages, but it was more important to accelerate the restoration of the normal economic life of Europe. It was a defect of the Treaty that Germany's liability was nowhere defined. It was impossible for her to meet liabilities of that kind. The Austrian conditions were even more severe. Germany and Austria were to start the new world with a millstone of unlimited indebtedness. This was not statesmanship, not business commonsense. It was not a clean peace ■pinch wuold end all war.
