Mr Austin Chamberlain (Chancellor of tihe Exchequer), speaking at the Guildhall, predicted e. redistribution of taxes. Ho favoured the abolition of the excess profits tax, which Wka unfair and the partial cause of the rise in prices. The financial position justified neither pessimist panic nor extravagant optimism. Britain needed stern resolution and a steady cbntin* uo.ua effort.
