CANDIDATES' ADDRESSES. Press Association. DUNEDIN, November 7. Mr A. Ashworth, Labour candidate for the VYakatipu. seat, spoke at Alexandra last night. He contended that both Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward had drifted away from' the principles adopted by Ballance and Seduon. He spoke strongly against land aggregation, and advocated State ownership in leading industries, also a State bank. He supported taxation on unimproved values, and advocated the repeal of military service, favouring a voluntary army. The candidate was accorded a rote of thanks and confidence. HAAVERA, November •". Sir G. V. Pearce, the sitting member for Patea, opened his campaign last night, when he spoke at Hawera. Ho deiended his attitude on the. Prohibition question, and referred to tho good points in the recent Government legislation, especially the Housing Bilt and tho Anti-Profiteering Bill. Ho criticised Sir Joseph Ward's taxation methods, pointing out -what lie considered anomalies, also the butter equalisation tax, which should have come from tho Consolidated Fund., candidate refuted statement's made by Mr Morrison at Maxwelltown concerning Air Massey and Bible in schools, and denounced the land gambling, which, be thought might lead to a wash-ing-up some day. Ha was against nationalisation of the mines, but agreed that the State mine was a good tbing. Mr Pearce concluded by warning the electors against the dangers of extremism in tho Dominion. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Pearce at the'conclusion of his speech. PAHIATUA, November 7. Mr R. S. li. Rico, Labour candidate for Pahiatua, opened his campaign in. the King's Theatre last night. The candidate professed rigid .adherence to tho Labour Party's programme. The speaker outlined the policy of the Liberal party, and said that Mr Massey's manifesto did not meet the needs of tho time. Ho analysed the Reform policy, favoured nationalisation of insurance, the mines, and the ferry service, and said the State should own tho colliers. Ho advocated « graduated land tax, which would prevent the inflated values, and put land on tho market at a fair rate. ■ The candidate opposed a local navy and militarism, and approved of Lord Jellicoe's report.
