GENERAL ELECTION

LIBERAL CANDIDATE FOE BULLER. Press Association. WESTPORT, September 89,. Mr D. G. O’Brien has been definite* ly selected as tho Liberal candidate for the BuJler electorate. Mr O’Brien, has been for tho greater part of his life engaged in coal-mining in the Buller district. He is at present an underviewer in tho 'Westport C®aX Company’s Millorton colliery. In pre-war days, Mr O’Brien took a keen interest in volunteering, serving in tho Millerton Rifles and rising to the rank of captain. For many years ho was secretary to the Granity Miners’ Union, and conducted numerous cases before the Arbitration Court. Mr O’Brien also took an active interest in local bodies, serving on the Buller Hospital and Charitable Aid Board and Bailor County Council. Ho was chairman of tho latter body in tho early stages of tho war, and resigned from the council to join the New Zealand Tunnelling Corps, which proceeded to France, this corps being the first colonial unit on tho Western front. Air O’Brien held the rank of lieutenant, and served in France for two years. Afterwards he went to Palestine, and served as a lieutenant in tho Rarotongan Corpse and was there until tho clean-np in that country when the Armistice was signed.
