WANGANUI v. WELLINGTON SOUTH. A twelve-a-sido match by telegraph between the above clubs was commenced on Saturday evening. A very prompt start was made and for a quarter of an hour moves went to and fro with a rapidity that augured well for the success of the contest. At this stage, however, a fault in the wire rendered further play impossible as the teams were unable to get in touch with each other for the rest of tho evening—to the no small disappointment of both clubs. It is probable that this fixture will be decided on the next two Saturday evenings—in which case the annual match between the Otago and Wellington clubs will be delayed a week. WELLINGTON CHESS CLUB.

The, latest results in the Wellington Club’s current championship tourney are as follow.—W. I Mason won from Faulknor and .- j from Kelling, A. Clark won from L. Sim, Sim drew with Godtschalk. Godtschalk won from A. Clark, Purchas won from Sim, and also from Taylor, and Barnes won from W. Mackay. and also from Fouhy. Messrs W. E. Mason. Purchas, Barnes, Davies and G. P. Anderson are leading in this contest. Mr H. L. James, who has some games outstanding owing to the cut in the railway service, is also in the running. -Messrs Barnes, S. Mackay, E. S. Taylor. Faulknor, and W. White are unbeaten to date in the club’s current "Petherick’’ Tourney (handicap). The plav in, both contests has dragged somewhat latterly, but will probably “liven up’’ now that the club is meeting on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. THE NGAIO CLUB. The best tallies to date in the annual handicap tourney of the above club are as follow:—.!. Lindsar (5-1), E’. E. Hicks (4-1). Appleton (2ro). Brooker (4-2), Glasgow (5-5); and A. 6. -Green (3-3). This tourney is about half finished, each competitor having twelve games I to account for. The annual match. Ngnio v. Working Men’s Club, is to he played at the rooms of the latter club at an early date provided that a start can be made with the match at 6 p.m., the cut in the suburban railway , service’ rendering an earlier start than usual necessary.
