COAL AND THE STATE
PRIVATE OWNERSHIP “BROKEN DOWN.” Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, July 13. The Hon. G. W. Russell, iu a lecture last night, expressed the opinion that the private ownership and workjng of coal-mines had absolutely broken down, and they could not expect the ’ capitalist, who was no fool, to put money into mines for the purpose of *e- • ceiving a doubtful 1 or 2 per cent. ;ref turn, when he could put it into broad acres and get gill-edged security. The only thing .was for the State to take over 'the full responsibility of industry and" foot the bill. Tho State should assume control of the whole of the mines and coal deposits of this . country, and look after the coal until it reached the retailers. Even then there should bo State wholesale yards, and all the retailers should do was to distribute tho coal to the people.
