FINAL MEETINGS
Mr W. H. P. Barber, a candidato for tho Mayoralty, addressed two crowded meetings last night, the first at Hataitai and later one in tho Town Hall. At tho former meeting Mr Barber stressed, the urgency of tho _ council proceeding with the Hataitai tunnel duplication. At hi 3 subsequent meeting ho said that the* compensation Teceived* from -the Government by the council for the removal of tho Thorndon baths and esplanade should be earmarked for a new swimming pool at Thorndon. This pool should be in tho vicinity of Tinakori road, and the waste water from tho spring near Grant road could be utilised to supplement the water supply. A successful mooting of Mr .T. E. Fitzgerald's committee was held last night, when final arrangements wero made to securo tho candidate's return to the council table. A final appeal is made to tho electors by thoso members of tho Miramar Borough Council who aro seeking reelection. The final meeting of tho campaign
conducted by the Greater Wellington Town-Planning and Ratepayers' Association was held last evening at Khandallah. Mr J. G. Harkncss occupied tho chair. The meeting was addressed bv Messrs Mauton, Gaudin, and Wi-i"iit, supported by -Messrs Dale, Meadowcroft, and H. D. Bennett. Mr W. J. Gaudin urged electors to vote solidly for the ticket selected by the association. The city was ou tno eve of great developments, which should be along .definite Hues. Mr Stickney (candidate tor the Citv Council) presided over a large audience. The speakers included Messrs J. Read, Monteith, Croskery, 1. Eagle, T. Brindle, R. McKeon, P. l'raser, M P., R. Sempie, M.P., and Mrs Beck. Mr Sempie referred to the state monts about "extreme Labour men. Ho assorted that tho extreme men were those who caused overcrowding, thoso who hoarded up the food in the freezers, and those who, for their material interests neglected tho public health of the community. Ho urged tho people to vote for the Labour partv's candidates, who were pledged to their organisations to place the community interests übove. tiie private interests. Tho class lino was drawn by tho late councillors by their treatment of thb vital interests of tho workers of this city, ,and they would deserve the vote of censure that would be proved at the ballot box. The meeting closed with great enthusiasm and cheers for the Labour party. Speaking at Khandallah last nigtit Mr F. W. Manton referred to various phases of municipal reform. He strongly advocated the linking up of the various boroughs with the city, and said he looked forward to the time when Khandallah would form an important part of the city. He also stressed the necessity of the City Council formulating a vigorous housing policy. iur i\. K.
