Some 85 days out from San Francisco, the American schooner Lucy sailed up to tho Castloeliff wharf, Wanganui, on Saturday afternoon. Tho Lucy, which is a three-masted "bald-headed" schooner, discharges a. cargo of case oil and a deck cargo of timber at that port and will, it is understood, sail for tho Islands, upon discharge, to. load copra for San Francisco. SAILORS MUST SWIM. American merchant sailors of tho future must be as much at homo in the water as on it. In other words, they miist know how to swim. The U. S. Shipping Board has ordered its recruiting service, which is training thousands
of young men for the merchant service, j to includo .swimming lessons in its train-, ing programme. It is expected that this instruction will reduce loss of life at s-ea, as many merchant sailors to-day are 'unable to swim a stroke.
