THE COMPETITIONS
YESTERDAY'S EVENTS INTEREST WELL SUSTAINED. The competitions were continued at the Town Hall yesterday, and were well attended. Altogether the interest was well sustained, the programme presented being characterised by variety. In the morning a Chopin piano solo was the attraction, and afterwards several contraltos were heard in selections of-their own. Pieces from the works of Dickens vera listened to in the afternoon, with vocal solos following. The latter had übiigatos for flute and violin and provoked considerable attention. EVENING SESSION FINAL RESULTS. ■ Several of the competitions were concluded in the evening, when final results were announced beiore a large audience. _ T'Jie programme commenced with a children's play, and towards the close or the evening much amusement was created by the impromptu speeches delivered by gentlemen. The concluding item -was a comedietta. Details are as follow: — Children's Play, "The Sewing Society" —Melvio Drummond, Dorothy McDowell, Ngaire Coster, Betty Menard, Eileen 3earle. Jean Ashby. Girls' Champion Recitation—S. Pearl Jacobs 1, 145 points; Ngaire Phippson and Aggie Atkins 2, 143 points; May Cooley 3, 142 points. Song in Character—Cicely Audibert 1. 162 points. ! Dicken3 "Character Sketch—Fanny Kut- i ner 1, 168 points; V. Bvans 2, 162 points; ; Flo Gow 3, 157 points. Musical Monologue (under 21) —Pauline Shotlander 1, 169 points; Fanny I Kutner 2, 166 points; Leonard Power 3, 162 points. In regard to this event the judge mentioned that the accompaniments supplied were the best heard during the competitions. They were faultless. The artist at the piano, it may. be mentioned, wa3 Mr Battersby. Scots Song (ladies*—Mabel Dyer 1, 145 ( [joints: Cicely Audibert 2, 113 points; Jeannie Nicholas 3, 133 points.
