REPORTS OF COMMITTEES

VARIOUS MATTERS DEALT WITH.

The ordinary meeting of tho City Council was held last evening, Councillor W. H. P. Barber presiding in the absence of the Mayor.

The finance committee submitted the following recommendations: —That the Mayor be appointed to represent tlie council at the proposed New Zealand Town-Planning Conference convened by the Government, and to be held some time in May next. That the request of tho Hataitai Municipal Electors' Association to be consulted in any proposal of trie council ior tlie relief of overCrowding, erection of lodging-houses, bo answered* to tho effect iaal the council invito tho association to submit their suggestions on these subjects. That the Hataitai Municipal Electors' Association be informed in reply to tneir request to know- whether the council intend to treat the construction of a traffic tunnel to the eastern suburbs as one of the urgent works to bo executed, tnat the council realise the importance of the work and that tho matter will be considered when they are framing the schedule of worlis to be undertaken. That the corporation emplovees be granted a holiday on March Ist next, for their annual picnic, and also that tho use of Day's Bay grounds be granted for the occasion; That the residents of tipper Duncan terrace be informed that the question of improvements to the street has not been lost eight of, but that owing to the dirh«ulty of obtaining suitable labour and the very urgent works waiting the attention of the council, it is regretted that it has been found impossible so lar to carry out the necessary improvements, and they will be commenced as soon as possible.—The report was adopted. The tramways committee recommeuded—That the Hataitai Municipal Electors' Association be informed, in reply to their letter in which they uige tae extension of the tramway from Hataitai to Eoseneath, the matter will be taKen into consideration among other extensions when material is available, Inat the following contracts for advertising on tho tramcars be approved-.—Messrs Magnus Sanderson and Co., city; Messrs Fletcher. Humphries and Co., Chrisrchurch; the Hawke's Bay Sonp and Tannery Co., Napier; Mr E. C Eians, dentist, city.—The report was adopted. The by-laws committee* recommenUca— That the electrical engineer be instructed to proceed with the erection of an additional lamp in Wade street East, provided the neecssaTv material for the purpose is available. That consent be granted to the Australian Automatic Weighing Machine Company to olace two of their machines at the Kilbirnie Tramway Shelter and the Lyall Bay Tramway Shelter on the usual conditions. Inat consent be granted to the subdivisional plan of Jand at the Parade, Island Bay. as far as section 1. 2. and 3 are concerned, and that consent be withheld tif to the balance of the subdivision m it? present form. That consent be granted to the subdivision of certain land at Grant road. That consent be not granted to a proposed subdivision of land at Overtourt terrace, Kilbirnio, umess lb?. number of sections is reduced from nine to six. That consent be withheld to a subdivision of land at The Terrace until the condition regarding the drainage of the land previously stipulated by the council is complied with. That consent be granted for the erection of an additional storev to the building in Ballance street for the New Zealand Bible Society, although the requirements of the bylaws respecting the width of walls are not fully complied with. That a permit be granted for the erection of a dwelling on a section of land in Eawhiti terrace, Kelburn, for the reason that the section is a large one, notwithstanding the fact that the frontage falls short of the strict requirements of the by-laws. That the council consent to a slight alteration of the boundaries between sections 55 and 66, block 28, Kelburn. That an application from a"- property owner for permission to occupy a portion of the unformed road reserve at Walter street be Tefused. That the council agree to the erection ot the proposed Methodist Memorial Hall in Cuba street, subject to the conditions stipulated by the city engineer being given effect to. That with the view of checking the stray dog nuisance in the city, a man be engaged temporarily in 6eeing that the requirements of the Dog Registration Act, 1908, are complied with, and also that 10s be the minimum stiu for which any dog will be sold at the unclaimed dog sales. That the duties of the motor .inspector and his staff bo lemodelled in the (Hreation indicated by the reports of the motor inspector and the city engineer.—The report was adopted. The outlying districts committee recommended i—That the officers be instructed to take the necessarytaction to compel an owner of property at Priscella crescent, Mornington, to carry out immediately the work of reinstatement of the road support to the satisfaction of the city engineer, and to inform the person that unless the request is complied with drastic action will be taken to compel compliance with the council's desire. That the Melrose Electors' Association be informed as under in reply to certain requests: That improvements in Antico and Caprera streets be undertaken after a number of important and urgent works have been completed. The asphalting of footways in Park and Sutherland roads will be completed before the expiration of the current year. As to storniwater drainage in the Melrose district, up to the present the pity engineer has been unable to consider the proposal. The entrance to the Zoo ■will be improved as soon as possible. The committee recommended:—That permission be granted for two property owners to occupy portions of the unfrnied road reserve at Hamilton road, subject to the usual conditions. That consent be granted for the erection of a-motor shed on the unformed road reserve at tho junction of Carlton Gore road and Linden terrace, Eoseneath, subject to the usual conditions and also subject to the location, design and construction of the shed being approved ly the city engineer. That a resident of Eoseneath terrace be informed, in reply to his request for the erection of a newpost and rail fence at such terrace, that the present fence has been repaired and it is not possible at present to have a new fence erected, although if circumstances were more favourable the committee would be glad to recommend the council to undertake the new erection. The committee reported that it had visited tho Hataitai district in company ■with the executive of the Hataitai Municipal Electors' Association, with the object of viewing the requirements of the district. As a result of the visit, reports would be obtained from the city engineer on the matters under discussion, and these reports would be the subject of recommendations at an early meeting of the council.—The report was adopted.
