SHOP HOURS
AN IMPORTANT DECISION. Press Association. TIMAIIU, February 20. Mr V G. Day, S.M., gave a decision to-day in a test, case, which is said to affect all the towns in the Dominion. Twelve grocers were summoned by tne Labour Department for failing to close on New Year's live at 7, the hour fixed bv requisition. Reference was made to the decision of the judge that "evening" in the Shops Act meant after sunset. The amendment of the Act in the War Regulations Act of last session intended to remove the doubt as to what was meant by "evening. lie amendment says: "Evening shall tie deemed to bo the time of the day not earlier than 5 o'-clock, ,in. the afteiluoon," and that-is .to. apply to all I existing requisitions Mr Day held that it does not apply, but that not cu-lier" limits the application to a i night on which the sun sets before o o'clock. He dismissed ono case, and adjourned the rest to enable the Labour Department to appeal if it deems fit It is understood that if this decision be correct, it is doubtful whether any requisition in the Dominion in regard to closing 'hours has any legal value.
