The Spartacus group of German Socialists referred to in recent cables evidently derive their name from a Roman gladiator of the same name. He was by birth a Thracian, and was taken prisoner by tho Romans and sold to a trainer of gladiators. In 73 B.C. he and about seventy comrades broke loose and took refuge in tho crater of Vesuvius. Spartacus then proclaimed freedom to slaves, and for two years defeated all armies sent against, him, finally haring 100,000 men under his command and capturing some territory. He was at last defeated and slain by Crassus in 71 B.C.
