*For six months and a half only. The total credit®. including .830,14" from national endowments on. account of old-age pensions, and .£4703 from gold duty on account of miners’ pensions, amounted to £35.438, leaving a net charge against the Consolidated Fund of £739.700. These figures, apart from the increase duo, to. the provision, of a waj ,bonus -dF5s V week, represent variations from the figures of the previouß year as under : . Increase. J 3 Old-age pensions 21,057 Widows’ pensions ............ 3,973 Miners’ pensions 3,928 Military pensions ' +798 ilndicates a decrease. The now pensions granted, and the deaths and cancellations recorded during the year, together with the pensions in force at the close of the year, were as stated hereunder:—
I estimate that the sum. of .£027,000 will bo required during the current year to meet the cost of tho above pensions. WAR PENSIONS. Tho gross payments passed through tho accounts during tho year amounted to £515,417, mode up as under: £ Payments made in New Zealand 495,000 Payments made in London 12,587 Payments made in Australia ... 2,925 Other foreign payments 29-1 Allotments paid after casualty... 4,491 Lump sums 105 Sundry Total £515,447 These amounts represent an increase on the figures of tho previous year ot £335,183. The total claims lodged to the close of tile year numbered 12,991 from soldiers, and 6452 from dependents of deceased and disabled soldiers. The total new pensions granted during tho year numbered 10,587, and tho value was £709,857. These added to the totals of tho pensions granted in previous years—namely, 6530, valued at '£342,193 —and the increases arising out of the Amendment Act, 1917—namely, £7o,ooo—made a grand total of all pensions granted since tho inception of the Act of 17,117; value, £1,122,052. The annual values of tho pensions in force at the close of the year wore as follow:- ,
