HOROWHENUA NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) OTAKI, October 1. When news Was received to-day that Bulgaria had surrendered there was considerable excitement. Church bells were rung vigorously, and the new syren oi the Otaki Volunteer Fire Brigade was msed to the best advantage. Mr Victor Bright left Otaki to-day for Auckland to catch a steamer for Australia, where he will spend a lengthy holiday for the beneot of his health. Mr Bright some time ago returned from the front suffering from gas. He will be accompanied by Private J. Johnson, also invalided home, who goes to see his mother, who is very ill. Anglers wore ■ out to-day, the opening of the season, but although the streams were well “whipped" the catches were 6 ™lr‘j. G. Stevens is at present indisposed, suffering from a bad attack of pleurisy.
