December 26, 27—Manawatu Eacing Club December 25, 23, January I—Auckland Eacing Club. MOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Tohunga.") The nominations received for the "Wellington liacing Club's spring meeting are highly satisfactory. Practically all of the big stables are well represented, and no doubt tie handicapper will be able to satisfy most of the owners who have entered horses. Especially pleasing are the entries for the juvenile events. Rose Pink has not been handicapped out of the Mosgiel Handicap at Dunedin, and although she will have to put up the same weight as John Barleycorn and Killjoy, her present form suggests that she may be able to do so with credit to herself. The mare receives lSlbs from Eorke's Drift, and a stone from Margerine, and a. good race should result if those horses mentioned compete. Since racing at Ashburton Glendower has been troubled with a kidney complaint. He was physicked and will shortly commence his New Zealand Cup preparation. The death is reported from Hokitika of Cannie Chiel, who carried the colours of Sir Geo. Clifford to victory in many important races. The son of Clanranald and Weather Eye took up stud duties in South Canterbury on the conclusion of his turf career. He was purchased bv Messrs Walsh Bros, a few weeks ago, but he contracted a severe cold on his trip to the Coast and died" before he reached his destination, which was exceedingly unfortunate for his new owners. C. Emerson heads the list of winning jockeys with six firsts, and H. Gray is next with one less. r Winter Cherry, who has been nominated for the Pearce Handicap and other events at the Wellington meeting, is reported to be doing excellent work on the tracks at Biccarton. She ran a mile arid a quarter at a solid bat on Saturday morning. , Desert Gold is not laving tco good a spin with her caretakers on the other side of the Tasman Sea. First of all heT rider, J. O'Shea, had to cry quits for i -while on account of a disabled leg, and now the mare's learner, F. Davis, nas contracted influenza. It is to be hoped the horse escapes trouble. A . patriotic trotting carnival is to be held at Christchurch next Saturday. The Rob?rtson patent starting barrier is to b» used at the meeting. Winners at Geraldine have earned the following penalties for their Kurow engagements : Kurow Handicap: Eose Pink 31 b, Mortham 10lb; Belfield Welter: llortharu 51b, Badial -101 b. These penalties are subject to the handicapper's approval, as a clause in the pnealty conditions states that: "If the handicapper deems fit 'he may increase the above penalties." Should the eight New Zealand Cup candidates engaged in the D.J.C. Mosgiel Handicap go to the .post, the AVingatui event will be invested with more than usual interest. Amongst its likely contertantsfc are: Eorke's Drift, Margerine, Rose Pfnk, John Barleycorn, Killard, Thaddeus. Cynic and Sedd-el-Bahr. After thirty years of continuous service, Mr T. Quealy has resigned the secretaryship of the Akaroa County Eacing Club. At the annual meeting of i tho ciub strong' representation was made to induce Mr" Quealy to reconsider his decision, but without avail, and eventually the resignation was accepted wii regret. Subsequently Mr Joseph, Wallace, of Christchurch, was elected to the vacant position.
