PROFESSIONAL, ORCHESTRA, . The Wellington Professional Orchestra, under the conduotorship of Mr H. Moschini. gave a most enjoyable concert at His Majesty’s Theatre last evening) The principal feature of the programme was the Unfinished Symphony, of Franz Schubert in B Minor. The remarkable beauty of this composition, even bereft of the last movement, which" Schubert, had riot time to formulate’, before he died,: is universally recognised by all musicians. As it stands it remains a memipal, to Schubert's immortal genius, .and no one has dared to suggest a ; Finale in. Allegro to make it conform with the recognised .classical .symphony. While there is any. amount of • room for imagination ns to how Schubert might have finished this, work,. Jiad Jm 'been given the chance)'" if ends "so" Beautifully with its Andante that, by .common .consent it has been decided among musicians that any attempt to maktran • addition would bo' nothing short of sacrilege. * So the .symphony, remains unfinished, and is known as one of the most famous that ever has been conceived. With its two movements it does not take long to perforin. and each movement of it is one of ’pure delight to anyone who lias any musical instincts. It received a very fine performance last night, the strings, wood-wind (especially' the bassoons), and the horns combining to secure most gloriously delicate effects. The overture on this occasion was that of Sydney Baynes’ "Endure to Conquer,” with its preliminary elegant oboe solo; and other items comprised the "Pomp and Circumstance March” of Elgar, Grieg’s "Wedding Hay” March, the "March of. the Lit tie Leaden Soldiers,”’ and the Melody in F of Rubinstein (known ns the thumb melody on the piano).
