Second - Lieutenant John Melvyn Watkins, killed in action in September, was the eldest son of Mr J. W. Watkins, Christchurch. The deceased, who was twenty-four years of ago, was educated at Christ’s College, and subsequently joined the staff of the local branch of the Bank of Now Zealand, where ho was employed up to the time of his enlistment in the Main Body. The late Lieutenant Watkins was well known in athletic circles in Christchurch, being captain of the Christchurch Swimming Club, and a prominent member of the Christchurch Football Club, and the Red and Black Association. Ho was one of the first ten men to enlist in Canterbury, and loft as a gunner in the Main Body, taking part in the landing at Gallipoli. He served on the Peninsula until the following October when he was badly wounded, a bullet lodging near his spine. Ho rejoined his unit in December, 1915, shortly before the New Zealanders loft for France, where he was promoted to sergeant soon x nftcr his arrival. Ho served through the battle of the Somme, and subsequently gained his commission. He joined up with the 4th New Zealand Howitzer Battery in Franco, and in January last he was severely gassed. Some two months ago ho was acting O.C. the wagon lines, and last month ho returned to the firing-line, meeting his death' a few days later. Second-Lieutenant Watkins was married in .England twelve months ago. RHEUMATIC GOUT CURED.
