In the last hour it made a ! good “late' run," scoring the-remainingJour-.gnmos, and. thus winning the- match .by .eight' games to three. The .yijftors.,fought stubbornly, hilt they were . handicapped by the absence of Messrs... Bfiooker, ouu '.Lindsay, • two of their leading ' players, in the game at board*--1 •; between the two captains, Mr James sacrificed a knight for a pawn in order to get a very lively attack , that gave Mr .Barnes several anxious moments.; By'a " long' end. careful defence and the forcing of-an cccasional - exchange Mr Darh.es ; got the upper hand in the final . stages, and oR taihed his oppofient’s resignation late in tho evening. The- Wellington . Club’s -championship tourney ' was , advanced a further stage last week, as. follows:—Mason 1 v. Godtschalk 0, ijddtscllatk 1 v.'Anderson 0, and Davies 1 v. Mason 0. Two , games were not completed, James 'holding an advantage, against ,W. Macfcay, • and Still against Clarks The Bout between Davies •and- Mason, the two leaders.; was closely followed by a : largo number of enthusiasts,. who found the play very instructive. In the course of his. attack Davies occasionally left pieces en prise, which his opponent dared not takeand in sustaining the attack he was not afraid to throw up'the 'pawns in-front of his castled king. Finally ho' queened one of these 'pawns, and Mason at once resigned. It was very- , fine chess all tho way. ’ Davies is now , loading .with the splendid tallv of 11 wins ami one draw.
